Summer Transition Specialist for Blind Teens (June 22 - Aug 6)

For seven weeks of the Summer, June 22 through August 6, a TVI or teacher is sought to provide instruction to students, ages 14-22, who are blind or visually impaired during their Summer Program. The Summer Transition Specialist will provide instruction in social skills, independent living skills, recreation and leisure skills, career education, assistive technology, visual efficiency skills, orientation and mobility, and compensatory skills including Braille, listening skills, and handwriting skills. The primary goal of this position is to provide the highest quality instructional services possible to students who are blind or visually impaired. This position pays between $14 - $18 per hour depending upon experience and qualifications.

DUTIES AND
Responsibilities:
Conduct comprehensive functional assessments to identify skill deficiencies;
Assist in developing activities that are meaningful and functional;
Prepare and follow lesson plans;
Provides instruction to students in the areas of the Expanded Core Curriculum;
Provide supervision of students while in the community, on field trips, and within the Lighthouse office setting;
Provide instruction to students in a variety of settings;
Coordinate instruction of transition students with the Transition Specialist;
Communicate effectively with other instructors, supervisors, and staff;
Prepare correspondence, reports, and other required case management information that are clear, concise, behavioral, objective, measurable, and reflect functional outcomes related to instructional process;
Adhere to the Rehabilitation Teaching Code of Ethics which is included in the Lighthouse's Personnel Policy;
Perform other duties as assigned.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Required relevant Bachelor's or Master's degree in Visual Disabilities or in a related field (e.g. Special Education, Education, Occupational Therapy, etc.);
Prefer certification as a Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI), and/or eligible for TVI certification;
Prefer certification in Orientation & Mobility, and/or eligible for certification;
Prefer expertise with assistive technology such as screen magnifiers, screen readers, note taking devices, Braille translation software, refreshable Braille displays, and Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills required;
Ability to take initiative and work independently required;
Computer skills including word processing, spreadsheets, databases, e-mail and Internet required;
Level 2 background check;
Drivers License; Car insurance; Clean driving record; and must be 21 years of age or older in order to drive the students in rented vans.

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
