OPS Environmental Specialist I

Position Number 37940046

The Biology Program is accepting applications for a full-time OPS Environmental Specialist I position. Full time means 40 hours per week.

Summary of Duties:
Prepare and analyze samples in the bench biology group including but not limited to chlorophyll, BOD and microbiology. Upload, verify, and authorize data for tests in the bench biology group. Maintain logbook bench sheets, quality control charts, maintenance books, and data files. Perform QC on laboratory supplies upon receipt. Prepare reagents, standards, and media for sample analysis. Perform instrument cleaning, maintenance, and calibration. Review and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and quality assurance. Clean and organize laboratory workspaces, glassware, and sample containers.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Essential):

  1. Knowledge of general biology and microbiology.
  2. Knowledge of the terminology, principles, and analytical techniques of the physical and natural sciences.
  3. Skill in the use of computers, including Microsoft Office software, internet resources, or other computer programs.
  4. Skill in use of scientific laboratory equipment.
  5. Skill in collecting managing, analyzing, and interpreting scientific data.
  6. Skill in determining workload priorities and ensuring proper completion of work assignments.
  7. Ability to participate in sampling for special studies.
  8. Ability to use QC measures to evaluate accuracy, precision and efficiency of biological methods and ensure high quality data.
  9. Ability to use laboratory personal protective equipment and work with acids, acetone, and other chemicals.
  10. Ability to think and work independently, and to work well in a group.
  11. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  12. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  13. Ability to work at counter height for long stretches of time with periods of frequent movement about the laboratory.
  14. Ability to work weekends, holidays, and extra daily hours as needed.
  15. Ability to maintain a valid Florida driver s license and travel.



Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Preferred):


16. Skill in the use of Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).
17. Skill in performing microbiological and chlorophyll analysis.

Position Requirements:

  • A Bachelor s degree from an accredited college or university with a major in one of the biological or natural sciences and one year of professional experience in biological science, environmental protection, or regulation. An official transcript or diploma is required of the selected candidate to confirm qualifications for the position.

  • Valid driver s license and travel.
  • Work weekends, holidays, and extra daily hours as needed.
